The spoon and the ugly cup

11x14 inch

My first real painting in oil was going to be a still life, but it didn't seem that fun: a cup, a napkin, a spoon and a McDonalds sugar packet. But I was told painting a still life is good for learning how to paint, how to use the techniques....how to see relationships, how to draw in 3D, and how to compare lights and darker parts.

My teacher Marie is a extraordinarily good 'real life' painter (see my last story about the start of my painting career where I included a painting of her). Thats what I would like try to do as well!

But, I found out relatively quickly that I don't really like to paint super realistically, because I'm not really good at it. I absolutely prefer to play with, and use, all different kind of colors.

One earlier version of my painting with a different background which I didn't like. And the left side of the cup was not right

After lots of lessons (I think six 3-hour lessons) and at least 4 different backgrounds, the painting was finally finished.
Ik denk dat ik klaar ben.....
I think this one is finished

The worst part: the cup. It seems to me that the 3D drawing is still not adequate. I also don't really like the green color I used on the cup.

The best part: the spoon. I really loved (!) to paint this...I use so many colors to paint silverware! It was awesome! Hopefully I can use/do this in my next painting as well.

Uiteindelijke resultaat, niet slecht als eerste werk.....
Final result, not bad as my first painting (if I am allowed to say this)
Nu op naar de volgende opdracht......
So now....the next painting

  1. Welcome to Blogworld--or Blogville as I call the blogworld of artists. Your first painting doesn't look like a first. It's terrific--especially the spoon. I find silver very difficult. I started painting seriously nearly three years ago and I did it by starting a blog called Drawing of the Day so that I would do a drawing each day and make drawing/painting a regular part of my life. My blog was a commitment and I took responsibility for keeping it up. Committing to a blog, your art will become an unshakable habit in a very short period of time too. Come visit me. Visit and follow lots of art blogs whose work interests you. Leave comments. Bloggers love comments. We all learn so much from one another. Beautiful first painting. I wish you many more. It's an honor to be your first follower.
